The Empordá has been a wine-producing area since Roman times. The tradition and millenary knowledge together with the appropriate characteristics of the soil, the healthy north wind, the mild temperature in winter, without major frosts, and hot in summer, but controlled by the sea breeze, make this region produce wines that are recognized and appreciated in everywhere. It is true that in the Empordá the terrible plague of phylloxera began in 1879, which ended practically all the vineyards of Catalonia, but little by little they were replanted, and although the extension of vineyards prior to the plague, viticulture is today a very vital and fruitful activity.
This will already encourage us to buy and try some of these wines while we are in the area. From Llafranc, it is worth visiting the well-stocked Palafrugell Vins Grau shop and being advised by the vendors, who know everything.
But, in addition, it is especially interesting to visit the wineries directly. In Baix Empordà, which is our region, the wine-producing municipalities are:
Begur, Bellcaire d’Empordà, Calonge, Castell-Platja d’Aro, Corçà, Cruïlles, Monells i Sant Sadurní de l’Heura, Forallac, La Bisbal d’Empordá, Mont-ras, Palafrugell, Palamós, Palau-sator, Pals , Regencós, Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Santa Cristina d’Aro, Torrent, Torroella de Montgrí, Ullá, Vall-llobrega. In each of them there are wineries and almost all of them can be visited. Some can be reached by bike or taking a walk, others propose a kayak ride before tasting the wines, others prepare something to eat and the tasting … visit the website of the denomination of origin and you will find a lot of information … or ask at the hotel reception.
